In the beginning

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. John 1:1-4

These verses are among my favourite in the Bible. They don’t mention his name but they are describing Jesus who was there in the beginning. They point to his deity and describe him in his glory way way before he came to the earth. He is called the Word. This hints at his role in creation when God spoke powerfully and created the universe and everything in it. He was with God and he was God. This is a big bone of contention with the Jehovah’s Witnesses who can’t handle the truth of Jesus being God so in their bible, the New World Translation, they have changed this verse to read, “and the word was with God and the word was a god”. This is wrong! Jesus is God! This is a powerful mystery that we believe and don’t necessarily need to understand. It’s a powerful truth that allows us to allow God to be God.

Scroll down to verse 14 and you catch the power of the Christmas story. We fast-forward from ‘The Beginning’ and see that “The Word became flesh”. The Christmas story is not merely about a baby in a manger. More than that, it’s concerned with Who that baby is. He is God himself who chooses to clothe himself in human flesh and visit this earth. One of his names is Emmanuel, which means “God with us”.

Today, I pray that your eyes might be open to the One who is behind the Christmas story. I pray that you will celebrate his deity and experience and ejoy his presence in your life today.
