Help in prayer

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. Romans 8:26-27.

This is a very important role that the Holy Spirit plays in our lives. This is important both for the recent convert as well as the more seasoned Christian because sometimes we do not know what we ought to pray for and how we ought to pray. Who better to help us but the One who searches our hearts, knows the mind of the Spirit and is able to intercede for God’s people exactly in line with God’s will.

The Holy Spirit is the Intercessor of intercessors. When we are weak or lost for words, He is there to help us to pray. He prays in us, with us and for us. He strengthens us and teaches us to pray. He helps to line up our prayers with God’s heart so that our prayers are aimed in the right direction. He connects with our hearts and allows us to pray deep prayers even when we are not saying any words.

A Bible commentator wrote: The Spirit, as an enlightening Spirit, teaches us what to pray for, as a sanctifying Spirit works and excites praying graces, as a comforting Spirit silences our fears, and helps us over all our discouragements. The Holy Spirit is the spring of all our desires and breathings towards God.
Today, don’t be found not praying when there is such powerful help available to you. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you pray, and then in faith pray! Your prayers will be powerful and effective!

As Paul would say to us in Ephesians 6:18, “…pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
