Let us grow up

Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgement. Heb 6:1

In October 2011, the Daily Mail reported of a man who had just been cleared of fraud charges over the $800 he receives every month for a ‘disability’. He was 30 at the time. In his free time he wears a diaper, sleeps in a giant sized crib, plays with toys on a play mat, is fed from a bottle and wears a grow suit. I’m not sure about the said condition (paraphilic infantilism), but you and I will agree there is something very wrong with this picture. You can see him in action in the video below.

Our verse today calls us to move beyond the elementary Christian teachings and be taken towards maturity. This verse is a continuation from the previous chapter which was describing a scenario where we ought to be taking solid food, but we are still needing to drink milk, where we ought to be teachers but we are still needing to be taught. It talks about a people who ought to have trained themselves to distinguish between good and evil.

I wonder if you ever feel immature in you spiritual walk. Do you sometimes think to yourself that you really ought to have grown up some more in your maturity in God? It seems here that our spiritual growth is our responsibility and something that we are instructed to do.

As we prayerfully spend time in God’s Word and then train ourselves in putting it into practice, we grow up and become more mature in God. It’s the right thing to do; let us grow up!
