Dealing with fear

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 2 Tim 1:7

I’ve heard my wife say, “The thing about the truth is that it always remains true whether we believe it or not”. And that there is true. Fact: God has given us His Holy Spirit to help us. Fact: He is not a Spirit that brings fear! Instead he brings power and the ability to love him, ourselves and others regardless of what situation we find ourselves in. He also gives us self-discipline or a sound mind – the ability to think clearly and to know what actions we should take in life.

Often, as recorded in the Bible, when God would reveal himself to people, the first command he would give them would be “Do not be afraid”. Fear was never meant for us. Fear normally comes when we chose to listen to the devil rather than God and we chose to believe an inaccurate or over-exaggerated version of the situation. It’s when we refuse to believe that God is with us and that He is greater than the devil or any situation that we could ever face.

Today, let’s choose to listen to the voice of God and to believe Him and Him alone. Read these verses out loud and choose to believe them. Then pray and ask for God’s help to give you strength and love rather than fear.

Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:13 For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand
and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 118:6 The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?

Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.

Hope this song encourages you – No longer slaves
