A promise of forgiveness

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Let me get to the bottom line of God’s promises: God is faithful! It will be no wonder that his faithfulness keeps coming up when we look at his promises. That’s just the way he is and that is what gives us hope. Yesterday we saw him in his faithfulness, helping us to overcome temptation. Temptation is not something to be feared. No. God gives us strength and victory! There is always a way out.

But let’s face it, no one is perfect and even though God has made a way for us to be victorious over the schemes of the enemy, there will be times when we fall flat on our face, times when we sin, when we give in to the lure of evil. We see Paul struggling with this when in Rom 7:15 he says “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” So true; sometimes it’s hard to understand why we keep falling into the same traps and we keep on sinning.

Here’s the promise. God is faithful and just and will forgive all our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Amazing. He gives us everything we need to resist evil. When we don’t embrace that and we chose rather to sin, he forgives freely and also gives a way for us to be purified and free from sin once again. He gives us a second chance, and a third, and a fourth, and a 100th. And of course the point is not that we abuse such amazing grace, but rather is the faithfulness of a gracious God.

Today, receive God’s forgiveness. Tell him you are sorry and then with his help, walk free. He is giving you a new lease of life, a chance to try again, an opportunity to realise that the devil is a defeated foe and to walk in the good of that.
