Love and truth

18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 if our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 1 John 3:18-20

This is not the only place in the Bible where love and truth are seen together. Remember, in Ephesians 4:15, we are commanded to speak the truth in love. Here, we are being commanded to love in action and in truth. This talks about us having a love that is genuine and to not just go through the actions, but even more importantly, it talks about being rooted and founded in the one who not only gives substance to whatever truth we hold or display but is himself called “The Truth”. In one of those bold declarations of Jesus he said that he is “the Way, the Truth and the Life”! It is said of us that we belong to the truth.

Also, remember that God is love. So we take courage in the fact that the source of our love is a source of genuine love that has the power to reveal Jesus to others and bring them into the Truth as well. When we show love, we are revealing the very heart and nature of God and bearing witness to all that he is and all that he has done through Jesus. Let us love the world like Jesus does, in action and in truth!
