The keys of the kingdom

’I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.’ Mat 16:19

There is much debate as to what the keys of the kingdom symbolise as well as who the keys were given to. What we do know is that Jesus was talking to Peter in the presence of the other Apostles. Many (and I) believe that the keys were given to Peter who was representing the Apostles. Keys are a symbol of authority. The power given to lock and unlock. In God’s kingdom there are some things that need to be bound (locked up) so that they do not have power of us. A lot of these things were already arrested by Jesus on the cross, but Peter and the other Apostles are seen sorting out sin issues, sickness, poverty and its effects. They are seen exercising the authority they got from Jesus to bind these things.

There are also some things that need to be loosed and set free. The presence and power of the Holy Spirit, love, joy, freedom, victory. A lot of what was given to Peter and the other Apostles has been handed down to us as well as part of our mandate in Jesus. They had a special, primary role to play, but the baton has been passed down as it were. Today, we have the authority and power to bind that which needs to be bound and to loose that which needs to be loosed. Jesus has given us authority to be his representatives and to finish what he started while he was here on earth. He has given us authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy and nothing will harm us in the process.

So let us exercise the authority and power that have been given to us in Jesus’s name. Let us approach situations with the knowledge and confidence that we have authority over them and of who we are in Him. Let us lay hands on people and pray that they might be filled with the Holy Spirit. Let us pray for our cities and nations and that the power of God might flow in abundance as his kingdom is extended. Let us pray for the sick so that they might recover. Let us pray for any that are oppressed by the devil in any way and bind up his power. Our God is greater, our God is stronger, God you are higher than any other. Our God is healer, awesome in power, our God!
