Work and Unity

Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, Then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Philippians 2 v 1-3

This Sunday at Church, we heard about work being a means to gain money or status. A famous song in the 90’s was titled ‘Money, Power, Respect’ and it greatly shaped my thinking as it argued that money gave you power, power then led to respect. That is a classic case of being conformed to this world. The text above counters that thinking. It points at being united with Christ leading to being fully united (like minded, same love, one in spirit, one mind) with one another thus putting aside selfish ambition and pride, a common thread of being heavenly minded exhibited most by Jesus as he prayed in Gethsemane.

As your work today, ask God how you can work towards the common good of those around you, not to seek praise or adoration. Rather, do it for their good and the common good of all involved. Trust me, you will feel better about your work and give glory to God all in one go.
