Loving is giving and giving is loving

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Cor 9:7

Don’t let the last 5 words of this verse slip quietly past you. God loves a cheerful giver. When was the last time you gave away something you owned to someone who needed it or just to bless them? The Bible commands us to give things and money away to others. For healthy Christian living, giving needs to be part of one’s lifestyle.

You and I like to receive gifts from others. It is good to receive, but the Bible teaches that it is even better to give. God set the perfect example for us in John 3:16 in that he expressed his love for the world by giving us the best gift ever – Jesus! Jesus in Matt 6:3 talks about when we give and not if. It’s a foregone assumption that giving is a part of everyday life.

Give something away today and consider how you might cultivate the habit. The principle of the tithe, for example, is a good starting point, something that helps you to cultivate the discipline of giving. Purpose in your heart to set aside money every month to give away.
