Check your tongue

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Eph 4:29

The tongue is a fire! So says James in James 3. It’s true. The tongue has power to set the course of your life on fire and can also itself be set on fire by hell. Now that’s scary. It’s scary to think that such a small piece of flesh can have such power and determine the course of one’s life and even those of others. In fact Prov 18:21 tells us that “the power of life and death are in the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

This ought to affect the things that we say. You ought to stop and check your tongue. Have your words been life-giving to others? Are your words those of hope, destiny and power or do they serve to steal the freedom of others, to kill their identity and destroy their lives? Some things you may not be aware of, that’s why you need to stop right now and check your tongue. Ask that God helps you renew you mind, that he may help you work on your speech so that your words are those of life. Fill your heart with good things because it is out of the overflow of the heart that the mouth speaks (Mat 12:34).
