The Spirit of God

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Gen 1:1

The Holy Spirit is all over the Bible. It’s important to have an understanding of who he is and what he does in the world and in your life. One of the things that make God God is the concept of the trinity, that is that God is three persons and yet one God. We can’t get our heads round it, but that’s why we’re not God. God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit – one God and yet three persons. And one of those persons is the Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of God.

We read in John 4:24 that “God is spirit”. The Holy Spirit has God’s attributes, for example, He is eternal (Heb 9:14), when He comes on you, it’s the same as the power of the Most High overshadowing you (omnipotence – Luke 1:35) and he is present everywhere (omnipresence – Psalms 139:7-10). There are many Scriptures to look at and it would do you well to do a study on who the Holy Spirit is, but the starting point for us is that He is God!

To be full of the Spirit is to be full of God. Take a few moments right now to ask God to fill you with his Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you into all truth and to illuminate the Scriptures this week as we endeavour to gain a deeper understanding of who the Holy Spirit is and what he does. May he fill you today as you make this song your prayer: “Spirit of the living God fall afresh on me. Melt me, mould me, fill me and use me.”
