Salt and Light

13 ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 ‘You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Mat 5:13-16

Salt brings out the flavour and good taste in food. Jesus says here that this is the same kind of effect we are to have on the world around us. We’re to bring the good out of our environment and those around us. We are to make them better. Light brightens up the environment helping others to see and function well. In summary we are to make this world a better place by virtue of us being in it.

A question for you: Think of where God has placed you (home, workplace, place of learning, a board, a committee, a team); is it a better place because you are there? Do you add value in such a way that it brings out the best in those around you and the place in general? Does your being there improve the place and make it a place where others want to be? Pray that God will help you to be salt and light, set your mind on that also and work in such a way that causes others to glorify your Father in heaven.
