No work, no eat

For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: ‘The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.’ 2 Thes 3:10

The Bible teaches us that work is from God, a gift to us to keep us gainfully and joyfully occupied and that laziness is sin in God’s eyes. God set the example for us right at the beginning of time as we know it, when he worked for 6 days and rested on the seventh. God took 6 whole days to create the heavens and the earth. Remember he is God and he really didn’t have to take so long. He could have made it all in a flash. His example was to be first emulated by Adam whose mandate was to work the garden in which he was placed.

Do you see work as a gift from God or do you see it as a curse, a necessary evil? I, for one, need to watch my mouth and some of the things I say about work that are not helpful in cultivating a healthy, godly attitude towards work. Let us cultivate and attitude of gratitude and joy towards the work that God has blessed us with. Let us be thankful that we have work because there are very many that don’t. Let us identify any form of laziness in our lives, ask God for forgiveness and give ourselves to working hard. Where you do not have a job, do not sit around, waiting for something to fall into your lap. Go volunteer if you have to, but give yourself to something. It glorifies God when we work hard and he blesses us with fulfilment, remuneration and reward as we see others blessed and lives changed through what we are involved in.
