Keep the main thing the main thing

1 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 1 Cor 15:1-2

The gospel is not just a message we need once in our lives, it’s something on which we take our stand; it is something that we hold firmly to. Too many of us are going through life in a wishy washy kind of way, lacking substance, lacking strength, lacking character, lacking purpose. You can be saved, having received the gospel when Jesus extended out to you and perhaps it was taught to you that the gospel was the A-B-C of your Christian and that you were to then move onto other things. Not so. The gospel is the A to Z. We are to come back to it daily. We take our stand on the gospel and build our whole life on it. We hold firmly and unswervingly to the powerful message that we have salvation from God through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As this message burns in us everyday, we will be unshakable. C.J. Mahaney has a book called Cross-centred life which everyone needs to read. In it he teaches that no matter what happens to the book, it’s message should never depart from your heart.

What can you do today to lay a couple of bricks in building upon the gospel towards a cross-centred life? What decision or meeting or task needs to come under the power and light of the gospel today?

Prayer: Dear Father in heaven. Thank you for the gospel and everything it means to me and for my life. Help me today to live out every minute under the light of the cross of Jesus Christ. Plant my feet firmly on the solid rock as I declare and sing: “On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand”!
