Closer than a brother

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Prov 18:24

God continues to use imagery from our family setting to illustrate how much he loves us. Sometimes we think of God as being out there somewhere and fail to realise that he is with us and just how close he is. Our friends can be unreliable, and this could be our ruin, but the One we have in Jesus is one who sticks closer than a brother. He stays with you no matter what. He loves you all the time regardless of how good or bad you are. He remains forever committed to you.

Sadly all too often, we look for love and assurance in all the wrong places. We do anything to gain the acceptance of others. We want to fit in with our friends. Our fear of rejection causes us to sometimes try and be who are not. You and I see it everyday; we see people who may or may not believe in God running all over the place looking for love and acceptance and yet failing to realise that what they are so craving is closer than they know. In Jesus, we have a Friend like no other friend. His friendship is closer than a brother’s and we can count on him through thick and thin. This Friend will never let you down or betray you. He will never talk behind your back and will never leave you nor forsake you.

Whether you prefer the modern tune of “Your love never fails, never gives up, never runs out on me” or the golden oldie, “What a Friend we have in Jesus”, the message is one and the same. In Jesus we have the best of friends. Today, you can walk and talk with your friend Jesus. You don’t have to go out and look for him, he’s always been close. Just reach out and touch him as it were. Experience and enjoy his presence, his friendship, his love. He’ll be your friend forever! Talk to him now in prayer.
