Check your mind

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Rom 12:2

Life is a battle, you probably know that well. The Bible teaches us that we need to take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (2 Cor 10:4-5). This is because a lot of the battle is a battle of the mind. Apparently there are strongholds and pretensions that are built up in our minds; we pick them up from all sorts of places – our upbringing, the books we read, the music we listen to, what we see on TV, what those around us say, any past experiences. Problem is, a lot of these attitudes set themselves up against the knowledge of God and a lot of the time we are not even aware of it.

That is why it is necessary to renew our mind. This needs to be a daily process. We need to read and study God’s word and to allow what he says to challenge what we think. When we become aware of anything that we think that goes against what God says, we need to arrest those thoughts, submit them to God and ask him to help us get rid of them. These are the makings of spiritual growth. Let 2014 be the year of growing in the things of God and remember a lot of the time, it’s all in the mind.
